  2. BookWalk Dropping Quotes Like Bread CrumbsIt is potentially lethal to review the work of fellow authors South Africans and Americans are especially dangerous because they are allowed to own guns and use them in their own defence Being a brash and reckless soul, however, I keep seeking ways to review the books of friends and acquaintances, mainly because I very much enjoy receiving appraisals from fellow authors So I ve come up with a new approach that marries some of my favourite aspects of book [...]

  3. How is it that you can live with someone your whole life and not know their wounds It was so great to read a local and I mean local I even met Maya novel about places that I know It was even amazing I won t say surprising because I have read quite a few breathtaking books that were written by Capetonians that it was so good What made it for me was the exceptional detail in description and use of the senses to portray childhood and later, the everyday life of an anorexic and bulimic The book is [...]

  5. An Elephant in the Room provides great insight into the life of those dealing with an eating disorder s Set within a time of great change within the South African, we follow the ever changing life of Lily, who over a period of time develops a preoccupation with her body image and food One cannot help but be drawn into the main character Lily experiences which is an amalgamation of wittiness, obsession, acute self awareness, hope and despair Maya Fowler is my new favorite South African author

  6. Reading this gave me great insight to the world of addiction I have a new found respect and understanding of eating disorders and those who have overcome it This book was beautiful and harrowing I was a little disappointed in the ending because I so desperately wanted to know about her recovery from this disorder but felt relieved that the character finally found solace and sought help.

  7. I could not put this book down It s a compelling and ambitious project, well executed Worth the read for sure.
