The Thief Comment

  1. This is my first experience of the writing of Ruth Rendell and I was quickly taken by her style already planning to read .A fast paced novel that reminded me a little of the programme Tales of the unexpected with it s rather quirky plot The lead character Polly is impulsive and struggles to control them When she is angered her impulses take over and she is driven to seek revenge by stealing their possessions and destroying them These impulses threaten to take control of her putting everything sh [...]

  2. I ve read Rendell s novella and short stories, now thisa novella A story about a young woman who steals as a means of revenge and happens to be a pathological liar Until she meets the right man and wants to give up her lying stealing ways Until she meets the wrong man to steal from This wasn t as dark as some of Rendell s psychological fiction, but it certainly has most of familiar traits, especially the innate, occasionally cripplingly so, British politeness It is that precise quality that gets [...]

  3. This book was a pleasant surprise There was a little suspense, a little mystery, and the protagonist was a kleptomaniac and compulsive liar The ending was abrupt but this was a great read

  4. Stealing something from people that upsets Polly is something she does quite a lot And what you did in your childhood may come back again to haunt you is the premise of one of Ruth Rendell s standalone novella Polly avenges on some people like her Aunt Pauline, a girl at school and a boyfriend who left her But then one day she met the man of her dreams and promises herself to behave and cut her childhood habit With her husband s virtues and good intentions and for the things he continuously show [...]

  5. Many different emotions rushed through me in the short period of time it took me to read this book Curiosity, anxiety, a sense of suspense, frustration, pity and disappointment are a few of them While the story started off as gripping and with an interesting premise, I couldn t help but feel that I didn t want to keep on reading I knew something unpleasant would happen, and even though at the beginning of the book I thought something unpleasant would be than fitting to this self centered and ar [...]

  6. This is nothing but a book of frustration, stupid characters, and grammatical and typographical errors I wouldn t pick this book if it is not sold for a cheap price. The story revolves around Pollie and how she managed to escape the mysterious man s revenge The story is full of filler scenes, probably trying to make the book long enough to be published And by filler scenes I mean boring and non sense stuff that has nothing to do for the development of the story What really frustrates me is its la [...]

  7. finished in about an hour it is a short story with kind of a message in it what goes around comes around like karma writing is fine nothing confusing nothing surprising or suspense in the plot no nail biting moments just easy read for and hour cheers

  8. Obsession and deceit, revenge and retribution, all Rendell s usual themes are present in this dark tale A good quick read for Rendell s fans.

  9. Review Rendell knows how to make your hair stand up straight on your head Maeve Binchy Rendell s eerie capacity to comprehend disturbed criminal minds continues to astonish The Times It s impossible to read the terrors abroad in her shabby streetscapes without total emotional involvement Sunday Times About the Author Ruth Rendell is celebrated around the world as a novelist at the peak of her craft The British Crime Writer s Association has honored her with four Gold Daggers, a Silver Dagger, an [...]

  10. This is a quick read which I read on my journey to work this morning It is all about a woman who has never been able to tell the truth for long More disturbingly when someone upsets her, she takes something which belongs to them and destroys it Things come back to haunt her though after she takes the hand luggage of a man who insults her on the plane She ends up with a bagful of clothes and money and after realising she is a thief she is determined to return it all to its rightful owner This lea [...]

  11. This quick read didn t grab me in the first few pages, but soon after had me on the edge of my seat For some reason, I felt a lot of tension building up to a grand climax throughout, so as a result the sizzle of an ending was a bit disappointing view spoiler After Polly found the money, I thought there had to be something sinister going on, but that end was never tied up Just as I was starting to feel something close to sympathy for Polly, she turned maniac and trashed poor Alex s house, so in t [...]

  12. As a young girl, Polly has impulse control issues When someone makes her angry she feels an overwhelming desire to take something they value and destroy it, then flat out lie she had nothing to do with it As an adult, in love with a man who abhors lying, Polly is again faced with the overwhelming desire to seek revenge on a total stranger, though doing so may harm her relationship Has she learned her lesson or will she give in to her darker nature Rendell does a lovely job sustaining tension and [...]

  13. 1.5 stars for Polly because kleptomania really interests me I know anyone who reads these reviews on a regular basis must think I have a real hatred of short stories I don t It s just that this is the example, to me, of how to do short stories wrong It s half a story After Polly finds Lant s money, it justzzles out There are no layers, no real twists and the ending is just so blah Nothing to recommend.

  14. The very first Ruth Rendell I have ever read and although it was only a short story, I found it very enjoyable.I would say 3.5 stars.

  15. A bit cramped, mechanical and paint by numbers Patricia Highsmith might have made something out of the scenario, but in the end this is just a very missable little book.

  16. My goodness, the book was billed as a quick read and indeed it was Eighty five pages, read it in less than an hour Enjoyed it.
